Who is Selgovae, the Open Historian?
John Edwards is a First-Class, 2026 OU History graduate with a passion for helping students navigate the challenges of the OU and distance learning. With 6 years of experience in academic research and essay writing, John has developed a deep understanding of what it takes to succeed in the Open University environment. His expertise in historical analysis, critical thinking, and effective communication equips him to help OU Arts & Humanities students in achieving their academic goals. In his day job, John is a senior IT Project Manager, and brings some exceptional technology experience and best practices to his work with Selgovae, helping students to use technology effectively in their studies.
What is Selgovae?
Firstly, Selgovae is a free repository of great content for OU students, providing access to real-world guidance on how the Open University actually works. If you are new to the OU, these guides and samples will help you navigate what can be a confusing landscape. We also offer subscription access to module toolkits designed to support your studies, including annotated worked examples and targetted, module-specific advice. Finally, we can provide individual coaching sessions to help you apply these tools and strategies effectively. These are available as scheduled monthly sessions, plus one to one chats when you need them, or targetted sessions supporting your key TMA and EMA deadlines.
Why Selgovae exists
I have had a great personal experience studying at the OU, but I know that many students struggle to work out the system and get what you need personally and professionallyout of OU study. Some of my tutors were fantasically supportive, but we recognise that not everyone gets the same level of engagement, and may need a different, individual approach. I created Selgovae to share my experiences and to offer this support and guidance to all OU students, helping you to succeed in your studies and make the most of your distance learning experience.
What Selgovae doesn't do
Academic integrity, especially in a challenging world of AI, is paramount at Selgovae. We will not, ever, write any assignment material for you. We will help you express your ideas and develop your own skills, grounded in the principles of academic best practice. Our focus is on equipping you with the tools, strategies, and knowledge to produce your own great work, meeting the high standards of the Open University.
